Birthing at Birthcare

Birthing at Birthcare is free to New Zealand residents and women eligible for free maternity care in New Zealand. Even if you are a New Zealand Citizen, we may ask for proof of eligibility. Please do not be offended as this is standard practice for women of any background.

You may be asked to provide copies of either:

  • Your passport (including all pages that have a New Zealand immigration stamp or sticker plus the photo page)
  • Your New Zealand birth certificate (and marriage certificate if your name has changed)
  • Your New Zealand citizenship certificate.

Birthcare Auckland Costs

Standard rooms are free for up to 2 nights. Private rooms are partly funded for up to 3 nights. If you have medical insurance it pays to check your policy, as it may contribute towards the cost of a private room at Birthcare. All rooms are subject to availability.

If you birth at Birthcare Auckland

Birth – no charge
Partner stay – no charge
Private Room for up to 3 nights – no charge
Standard Room for up to 3 nights – no charge
After 3 nights – $635 per night

If you birth at Auckland City Hospital or Middlemore Hospital

Standard Room
Twin share with en-suite – First 2 nights no charge
After 2 nights – $525 per night

Private Room
Single room with en-suite – First 3 nights $350 per night
After 3 nights – $635 per night

Premium Room – minimum 2 night stay
Queen bed with en-suite – First 3 nights $635 per night
After 3 nights – $735 per night

If you birth at North Shore or Waitakere Hospital and live in the Waitematā District Health Board catchment area, the above charges apply if your transfer is approved by the manager on duty.
Otherwise the unsubsidised rate (after 2 night rate) will apply.

Charges for non-residents (non-eligible for free maternity care in NZ)

If you are not a permanent resident of New Zealand the following charges apply. A deposit of 50% is required at time of registration.

Birth (normal birth with no secondary care costs) – $4,500
Postnatal Stay in a Standard room – $1,500 per night
Postnatal Stay in a Private room – $1,800 per night
Postnatal Stay in a Premium room – $2,000 per night

Partner stay

Fold down beds are available on request for partners who wish to stay over in Private Rooms.

Partners are welcome to stay overnight with you if you have birthed at Birthcare and are staying in a private room.

If you are paying for a private or premium room your partner can stay free of charge.

Breakfast hot including continental – $15.50
Lunch – $20.50
Dinner – $25.00

Birthcare payment terms

All major credit cards accepted except for Diners Card and American Express. We do not accept cheque payments.

All amounts outstanding are to be settled on check out. Clients are expected to leave Birthcare by 11.00am on the day of check out.

Late discharges may attract a discharge fee of 50% of the daily rate. All prices are inclusive of GST effective from 1st July 2022. Prices may be revised from time to time at the sole discretion of Birthcare Auckland Limited.

Please note: We apply a 2% surcharge to payments made using a credit card, which is in line with our cost of acceptance. We do not surcharge debit cards.

Birthcare increases its price annually on the 1st of July in line with CPI.
